Wilkins, Director/Curator of the Atwood House Museum in Chatham and author of “Cape Cod’s Oldest Shipwreck: the Desperate Crossing of the Sparrow-Hawk.” Lured by the prosperity of the New World, the unfortunate crew of the Sparrow-Hawk found only disaster on the shores of Cape Cod. Join Mr. Wilkins as he delves into the secrets of this ship. This talk is free; registration is appreciated.

June 2011 Update on the Sturgis Library's Building Project

At the June 2nd Town Council Meeting, the Council approved $75,300 in Community Preservation Committee funding for the Sturgis Library. This money represents that final piece of the funding puzzle, and will allow us to finish up our building project. With CPC and other grant funding, we will complete the project with the following repairs:

Complete work in the Kittredge Room, including lighting upgrades and carpet replacement
Reshingle and repair the asphalt roof on the rear portion of the building
Repair and renovate the archival vault and install a new climate control system
Work on solving drainage problems around the perimeter of the library
Make several small masonry repairs to the old foundation and chimneys
Replace/repair portions of the building's walkways
Repave the parking lot

We hope to have everything wrapped up by the end of August. Fingers crossed!

Funding for this project came from the following sources:

• Foundation grants, bequests, and donations from individuals, organizations and businesses: $227,100
• Massachusetts Cultural Facilities Fund $247,600
• CPC funding = $75,300
Total Project Cost: Approx. $550,000

We are so grateful to everyone who helped make this project possible. Many, many thanks!

History Along Route 6A information update

Some of you may have noticed a feature in the Barnstable Patriot's A&E Lighthouse section on the upcoming History Along Route 6A program. It was a great article, except the information was about last year's event! A new article will be published next week, but in the meantime, you can read an updated article in the online edition here, and you can find out some more details about this year's event on our web site under the "News & Events" menu (or click here).

building project update

Our Building Project is moving along, and we're taking a little break in activity while we wait for funding from the Barnstable Community Preservation Committee to be approved by Town Council.

Funding for this project was raised through grants, bequests and donations. A complete list of funding sources and donors can be found on our website.

Here are the projects that have been completed by far:

Structural reinforcement of the roof rafters, joists, and beams
Reinforcement of support beams under the original building
Replacement of the windows in the "new" section of the building (circa 1972)
Reshingling of the "new" section of the building (3/4 complete)
Installation of piping for the fire suppression system (partially completed)
Painting of window trim and piping (partially completed)
Excavation in the crawl spaces under the old building to make way for the fire suppression system
Replacement of an emergency exit stairway on the side of the building

Projects still to be completed are:

Completion and testing of fire suppression system, including painting and enclosing the piping in the main areas of the library. Piping that was recently installed in the Kittredge Room will be removed and relocated.
Replacement of the boiler
Replacement of the roof on the "new" section of the building
Completion of shingling
Grading and drainage work to alleviate leaking in the basement
Masonry work to repair chimneys
Renovations in our archival vault including improvements to the climate control system and installation of a non-water fire suppression system
Driveway paving
Repairs to the walkway

We hope to have all renovations complete by early fall.

ebooks experiencing growing pains

As ebooks become more and more popular, the book publishing business is in a quandry over how to make them available to libraries and still keep an eye on the bottom line. Many of you have read of the recent decision by Harper Collins to limit access to their titles by setting a limit on the number of times they can be downloaded through library sites like Overdrive (which is the ebook delivery service used by the CLAMS network.)

At their meeting last week, the Directors of the CLAMS libraries voted to boycott Harper Collins titles for the foreseeable future in hopes that the voices of libraries across the country will help publishers understand that ebooks are important to our library users, and limiting their access is a step in the wrong direction. The issue is further complicated by some publishers who choose not to offer ANY of their books in ebook format to libraries.

There was excellent article in the New York Times on March 14th that outlines the issues and how they affect you, the library user. We'll keep you posted on further developments as this issue continues to unfold.

The Great Gatsby

Wheaton College professor of English, Sam Coale, will facilitate a lively discussion of The Great Gatsby here at Sturgis Library, March 29, 7 pm. Copies of the book are available via CLAMS along with cd, playaway, or downloadable audio book versions. In the meantime, listen to Studio 360's exploration of "the great American story of our age."

Our 2011 Jewelry Sale Starts March 1st

The Sturgis Library's 2011 Jewelry Sale will be held from Tuesday, March 1st at 1:00 PM through Friday, March 11th at 5:00 PM. The sale will be open during regular library hours.

Sale items include earrings, necklaces, watches, rings, pins and brooches, cuff links, accessories, and more! There will be a wide variety of new, gently used and vintage jewelry to choose from including gold and silver items, semi-precious stones, freshwater pearls, great costume jewelry, and handcrafted pieces. Styles range from classic elegance to hippie chic. There's something for everyone, at fantastic prices. Most items are priced at under $20.

We are accepting donations of jewelry through March 1st. You can leave your donated pieces at the desk.

Rediscover the Classics

The first gathering takes place January 25 at 7 pm with a discussion of The Awakening by Kate Chopin. Adventures in London

Book Club Girl's Maisie Dobbs Read-Along is providing the motivation for me to try this series by Jacqueline Winspear. In 1929 London, Maisie Dobbs opens up her own office as a private investigator. There are seven titles already out in this series with the eighth due out in 2011. Book Club Girl will be posting discussion questions each month starting in January and will finish up in April with an on air talk with author Winspear.

Learn to Knit this Winter!

For several years, Didi McKimmey has volunteered her time to teach a Learn to Knit class here at Sturgis Library. The class is open to boys/girls & men/women from ages 8 to 80. It's fun to see all the wonderful projects created and hear the good time participants have. The next class starts January 11 and runs for six weeks. Searching for Ancestors

One of the resources we have available for genealogical researchers is our membership to the New England Historic Genealogical Society. NEHGS has a wealth of databases and resources that can be accessed via their amazing web site. Our public computers are set-up to allow you to access all the databases available to members and now NEHGS has an online tutorial that provides guidance in using their site. The tutorial is available from any computer connected to the Internet and provides you with an overview of resources available plus lots of helpful tips. Once you take the tutorial, come in and search for your ancestors!

A Worthwhile Surprise

Perhaps it's because I recently read an interesting essay on the importance of tension in fiction but I was very aware of Susanna Daniel's ability to create tension in her first novel, stiltsville. I found it difficult to put this book down and in the end was surprised to realize this was actually a very simple story. It's the story of a marriage and of love- love of family & friends and the powerful love we can have for a place.

Starting at 3 pm, the Friends of Sturgis Library will be serving refreshments and having a holiday book & gift sale. At 4 pm, children can create an edible snowman and at 5 pm, Kathleen Healy will present a Festival of Lights musical program for the whole family. After you can stroll down to Barnstable Village!

Russian Tales

Recently I watched the movie, The Last Station and enjoyed it immensely. It's based on the novel by Jay Parini and portrays Tolstoy in the last year of his life. I found the historical setting fascinating and was captivated by the story of a young man (Tolstoy's secretary) learning to think for himself. This got me thinking about reading Tolstoy's War and Peace. It's available as an ebook in CLAMS (in the section of free public domain titles) so I downloaded it onto our Nook. At some point this winter, I'll give this epic a try.

Horses tales and other inspirational stories

While watching the movie Secretariat recently, I was reminded of one of my favorite books, Seabiscuit: An American Legend by Laura Hillenbrand. I went ahead and added it to my Shelfari account. Hillenbrand has a new book coming out, Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption. It's not a title I would normally gravitate toward but since I loved her previous book, I'll give it a try. So far, you can place a request in CLAMS for the print book, an audio cd or for the downloadable audio.

Early Barnstable

Reverend John Lothrop's home and meetinghouse built in 1644 still stands today as part of the Sturgis Library. On Tuesday, October 26, you can learn about the persecution suffered by Lothrop and his congregation before the religious courts in London and their flight to Cape Cod. Dan McConnell, President of the Cape Cod Genealogical Society and the historian for the Lothropp Family Foundation, will present this story of the founders of the town of Barnstable at 7 pm.

Downloading ebooks

After searching the CLAMS catalog for Dinaw Megestu's newest novel, How to Read the Air, I decided to download the ebook version. My husband and I had purchased a Nook earlier this year and part of the appeal was it's compatibility with CLAMS downloadables. This was the first time we used the CLAMS service for ebooks so we made use of the Help section. There we found answers to our questions and within a short time we had the novel on our Nook. Let us know if you're trying out the ebook service.

Friday night, I heard Jon Katz speak about his new book, Rose in a Storm. He is an interesting & amusing speaker; he has a great story of how a librarian provided motivation for him to become a writer. One of my favorite books of his is Running to the Mountain. I enjoyed his exploration of his search for a meaningful life and his finding himself on what is now Bedlam Farm. If you haven't read his memoirs or fiction, give Jon Katz a try.

Helping Haiti

There is a wealth of information right on their site including links to Massachusetts City and Town Bylaws and links to Massachusetts Legal Forms. celebrate summer with us!

Summer had just begun, and we want to celebrate with our patrons, friends, and neighbors. We invite you to join us for our Open House Lawn Party on Sunday, June 27th from 4 to 6 pm. Best of all, it's our treat -- admission is free.

Don't forget to bring the kids -- there will be appetizers, hot dogs and chips, soda and juice, wine, and Cape Cod Beer. We'll have kids' games and activities, a silent auction, a cake walk (remember those?), and music by the lovely and talented Tom Silver. Tickets for our $2010 Cash Raffle will be on sale, and the Friends of Sturgis Library will have artwork, notecards, and Sturgis Library collectible items available for sale. We'll be drawing the winning tickets in the cash raffle at the end of the evening (as long as we reach our ticket-selling goal).

So bring the whole family for a relaxing evening of fun! We'll see you there!

authors credit sturgis library

It's always rewarding when authors and researchers credit the people and places that helped them in their work. It's especially gratifying when library staff have spent time helping them uncover interesting information and put the pieces of their research puzzle together. Two recent Sturgis Library credits come from very different sources.

Sally Gunning credits Sturgis Library, among other local libraries, for help in her latest historical novel, The Rebellion of Jane Clarke. If you haven't read this series, it's really engaging and is set here on the Cape in the colonial era.

Linda and Gene Kangas also credit us in their recent article on local bird carver Elmer Crowell's decoys in Decoy Magazine. You can read the article here.

Award-winning photojournalist Ethan Daniels will speak about (and show photos from) his newly released stunning book-length collection of underwater photography, Under Cape Cod Waters at the Sturgis Library on June 17 at 6 pm. One of the first hard-boiled female P.I.s, Chicago’s V.I. Warshawski is hired, ostensibly, to find a missing girlfriend for a client’s son. What she finds instead is a murdered boyfriend and ties to the mob.

Local author, local setting

Marcia Woodruff Dalton spent childhood summers on the Cape and now lives here. Her first novel, The Ice Margin, is the story of a woman in crisis who finds solace and strength here on the Cape. Robert Finch says, "Marcia Dalton is a compelling storyteller and a perceptive chronicler of the human heart."

There are quite a few events happening in June as part of the program series History Along Route 6A. You can tour the oldest building to house a library, learn how to discover the history of your home, and eat some delicious strawberry shortcake. Historic Inns along 6A in Barnstable and Yarmouth Port are offering tours. For a $5 donation, all those on the tour can put their names in for a drawing of a $200 gift certificate good at the participating inns. All proceeds will benefit the Yarmouth Port and Sturgis Libraries. Check out details of the program and join us along 6A!

Play Ball!

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the film For Love of the Game starring Kevin Costner & Kelly Preston. My first thought was Costner has already done several baseball movies, how good could another one be? Pretty good actually. I'm not a huge sports fan but do enjoy the marquee events; I'll watch March Madness, the World Series, the Super Bowl, well, you get the idea. I also enjoy a good film with a sports theme as long as the sport part doesn't get too tedious. This film gives you an inside look at an aging pitcher having the game of his career while he struggles with a significant relationship. I enjoyed the view from the mound and experiencing the crowd plus appreciated the teamwork needed to win games. Other sport movies I've enjoyed include: We Are Marshall, Greatest Game Ever Played, and Invictus.

One of the (many) things I love about public libraries is I can try out lots of books for free! So when I decide to purchase a book, I tend to agonize a little. Tomorrow, I'll head to Barnes & Noble to support the Barnstable Seven Libraries Book Fair. Hmm, what to buy? I'm thinking of picking up Matterhorn a novel that intrigues me, it won't be a quick read & I think my husband Dave will want to read it also so a good choice for owning. Also thought I'd pick up a copy of Louise Penny's Still Life to put in our guest book section at home. Then I remember I like to read one of Nevada Barr's National Park mysteries when I'm on vacation and then...
Guess it won't be so hard to spend some money on books after all!

are you confused about the federal census?

Many of you have been asking for 2010 federal census forms, saying that you haven't received one in the mail yet. Here's some information that may help answer your questions:

Federal 2010 census forms were only sent out to those with an actual street mailing address (ie 3 Main Street).
Those with a PO Box will not receive a form in the mail. Census workers will be going door-to-door for those households with forms specifically keyed to that address
Libraries/post offices/Town Halls will not be carrying blank federal forms
People cannot fill out the federal census online

Remember that this is the Federal Census, done only once every 10 years. Info on the federal census can be found here:

This is not to be confused with the annual town census, which is a different thing altogether. For Town census info, see the Town clerk's website:

Can't find it in CLAMS?

Have you been looking for a specific book (or movie or music cd or...) and not found it in CLAMS? If an item is not owned by any CLAMS libraries, try the Virtual Catalog. From the CLAMS home page, look to the upper right or middle right, you'll see a link to Virtual Catalog. Enter all 13 digits of your library card number, choose the library where you want to pick-up your item (from the drop down box) and then click start. From the Patron Main Menu, you click to get to the search page or you can see previous requests. When you find an item you want, I recommend you click on the item and then on Show Availability. Virtual Catalog is different from CLAMS, if the item is checked out, this system doesn't start a wait list so only place a request for an item that shows available. The Virtual Catalog system is being funded with state funds via the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners.

Circle the globe with Hit & Run History

Tuesday, March 30, join Hit and Run History's crew of Gumshoe Historians here at Sturgis Library for the premiere screening of the episode on the Columbia Expedition and its commander, John Kendrick of Harwich. Columbia was the first American ship to circle the globe, leaving Boston in 1787, just weeks after the Constitution was drafted. Its story, and those of its people, begins in New England.

The first half of the film covers the prelude to the voyage. The second, never-before-seen and filmed on location in Boston, New York and Cape Verde, follows the Expedition across the Atlantic. During the filming, Hit and Run History's crew forged swords, dodged Dengue-ridden mosquitoes and climbed volcanoes.

The film will be followed by Q&A from the audience, and a description of how Hit and Run practices history.

Do you love the Bronte sisters? Melissa Averinos of Yummy Goods in West Barnstable and her friend Beth Dunn, along with a group of ardent Jane Eyre and Bronte fans, are starting a new online group called Bronte Along. It looks like a lot of fun, without any of the pressure of a regular book group. Dreaming, movie watching, creativity, and swooning are encouraged. So, what are you waiting for -- Bronte along! Suspense in the Vermont woods

He recommends Greenwood's latest, The Hungry Season, a novel that explores how a family responds to a tragic loss. Family Sagas

Recently I was in the mood for a big, sprawling book; a family saga similar to The Forsyte Saga or Rosamunde Pilcher's The Shell Seekers. A fellow librarian recommended Penny Vincenzi's Spoils of Time trilogy. I realized I had read the first title so I picked up the second, Something Dangerous, that opens in 1928 London. I'm enjoying the backdrop of the publishing industry and all the Lytton family's drama. Library Journal says "As World War II ravages Europe, Vincenzi is at her best, painting vivid portraits of wartime London and stalwart British citizens making sacrifices and dodging bombs. Old characters die, new characters are born, and intriguing new plot twists are introduced, setting the stage for yet another meaty installment of this irresistibly sprawling multivolume yarn."

Publishers Weekly chose Moonlight in Odessa as one of their top ten debut novels in 2009 and Kyle, our circulation assistant, says this is a novel worth reading. The publisher, Bloomsbury, bills the book as "A Short History of Tractors in Ukrainian meets Desperate Housewives in this exploration of the booming business of Russian e-mail-order brides, an industry where love and marriage collide with sex and commerce." Richard, one of our regular patrons, told me he really enjoyed John Irving's latest novel, Last Night in Twisted River. Irving has been publishing novels for over 40 years. The New York Times has a quick interview that I found fascinating. Irving describes how he starts a novel with the last sentence. Check out Last Night (in addition to the hardcover edition, it's available in large print, as a downloadable audio book and on cd via CLAMS) and see what you think.

Labor Day by Joyce Maynard is a surprising book. The story is told through the eyes of 13 year old Henry so I was expecting a coming-of-age tale, which it is. I also found it to be suspenseful and at times it threatened to break my heart. In the end, I thoroughly enjoyed the characters, the unfolding story and the view of quirky hearts that triumph.

Fairy Tale for Adults

We had an indoor fire for the first time this season and that gets me thinking about books to read during the cold weather. I just finished The Forgotten Garden by Kate Morton. It's a perfect book for day by the fire, as Booklist says "this is a sprawling, old-fashioned novel, as well-cushioned as a Victorian country house, replete with family secrets, stories-within-stories, even a maze and a Dickensian rag-and-bone shop." It's available in large print, as a playaway, on cd as well as regular print. Come in and check it out!

Promising new series

Recently, Cathy (circ staff) recommended Dog On It by Spencer Quinn for our summer reading list. Dog On It is the first in a series featuring Chet (a dog) and Bernie (a divorced, financially strapped PI). Library Journal says Quinn's "narrative is intriguing, fast-moving, and well written." Not surprising when you find out Quinn is a pen name used by Peter Abrahams, a novelist that lives here on Cape Cod and one who has earned praise for his thrillers.

Summer Reading - for Adults!

Lots of children have signed up for summer reading here at the library. What about the adults? What do you like to read in the summer? Here's what some of our staff and patrons had to say: Julie has been motivated by her teenagers and re-reads some of the classics like Great Expectations. Lucy likes to take advantage of the extra daylight and read BIG books like Prince of Tides and Bellefleur. Marilyn reads fun & zany like the authors Evanovich and Hiaasen. I like to read something light, I just finished Asaro's sci-fi romance Diamond Star and have been enjoying Downie's Roman mysteries. We'll put these and other suggestions on display in our Simpkins Room. Come by and check them out! and let us know what you recommend.

celebrate the 1969 moon landing

The JFK Presidential Library and Museum has just launched a very cool interactive website to mark the July 16-20, 1969 Apollo 11 Mission and moon landing. The new interactive website will recreate Apollo 11's lunar mission, minute by minute, with an interactive experience that lets visitors experience the mission as it happened, using archival audio video, photos and "real-time" transmissions on the site and via Twitter. After the four-day event, the site will become a self-guided tour that visitors can explore at their own pace. Visit the site at www.wechoosethemoon.org.

Audiobooks for your iPod

A Wealth of Volunteers

Once a year, the staff and trustees of Sturgis Library like to gather our volunteers together and thank them for all they do. These days, we all hear about financial losses, budget cuts – what we don’t have and what’s lacking. Here at Sturgis Library we feel lucky to celebrate our wealth of volunteers. Over 80 volunteers helped this year with putting library materials back on the shelf, gathering items to send off to other libraries, cooking for special events & bake sales, putting together our mailings, assisting in the Friends Bookstore, preparing library materials for circulation, teaching a knitting class, assisting with archival projects, serving on the Friends board, putting together pamphlets, and mending library materials. A Great Debate

A number of Cape literature teachers will gather June 8 at the Cultural Center of Cape Cod to debate “The Great American Novel”. Each panel member will argue for one particular book and then they will debate each other. Following that, the audience can join in to challenge them and/or offer their own favorite books.

This event is presented by New Enlightenment Institute for the Preservation and Advancement of Civil Democracy as part of their Cape Lyceum, a monthly lecture series.

Summer Travel

As summer approaches, many of us start thinking of travel and vacations. This year, my husband and I plan on staying close to home. There are lots of fun and interesting places to visit right here on Cape Cod. As usual, I turn to books for inspiration and information. One of my favorites is The Nature of Cape Cod by Beth Schwarzman. Schwarzman provides a wonderful (and understandable) introduction to the geology of the Cape. The bulk of the book focuses on specific areas for walks and paddling. Maps along with clear details of what to see and do are provided.

Participate in Maritime Days

Join in the Maritime Days festivities. Sturgis Library and Barnstable Historical Society are presenting the program Catboat Sarah, Tuesday, May 12 at the library. Bill Cook will present a video of the Cape Cod Maritime Museum's project of building a replica of an 1886 Crosby catboat. Maritime Days are celebrated Cape-wide for the month of May. The Cape Cod Chamber of Commerce sponsers a site that lists all the events.

stauffer miller to speak

Stauffer Miller, a long-time Cape Cod resident and avid historian, is author of the compelling new history of Cape Cod’s naval officers in the Civil War Hoisting Their Colors. He utilized the collections of the Sturgis Library as well as additional Cape Cod libraries, historical societies, and other resources.

On Tuesday, May 19th at 3 PM, Mr. Miller will discuss his research strategies and answer questions from researchers and others on the rewards and challenges of documenting the Civil War era. This is a wonderful opportunity to gain insight into the research process, and also to learn more about the unique collections at the Sturgis Library.

Time magazine has an interesting article that discusses the future of publishing. Featured in the article is Lisa Genova who, unable to find an agent willing to represent her, self-published her book Still Alice. Genova went from selling Still Alice from the trunk of her car to getting an offer from Simon & Schuster for a half million dollars. This article maintains that the novel is alive and well, just transforming with the times.
